how we spent our 4th!

Actually, this post should be titled, "How we spent our 4th of July weekend" For my birthday, my mom gave me her time and skills to help me paint one room in my house. I've almost painted them all, but since our kitchen remodel, we needed to repaint the kitchen, so that's what we did! And it didn't take that long. Mama and I know how to knock out a room in no time! So, since we had more time, this led us to also replacing the god awful original light in the kitchen. This was a big deal for me. I didn't know how to do that so for months, it had not been done. Here's a picture where you can see the light, and a bunch of other mess!

The light is from good ol' Home Depot. It's vintage looking so it looks like it actually came with the house. And it's called Estelle, which is my grandmother's name, so it was a perfect fit! I love it installed even more than I did in the store. It gives off amazing shadows.

By far, the best part of the weekend was putting up this display. A few years ago, Bradley's Meme gave us all these old, rusty choppers and graters. I immediately saw them hung in our kitchen, but we didn't have room in the apartment and this kitchen was a wreck until now. It's so exciting to see this idea come to life! And I love that it's not just things we collected. They're from his family. So it's nice to have that with us. And it's in my favorite room of our house, so it really just brought the whole space together.

We laid it out on the floor, first. Moving things constantly until we got it just right! Then came the hard part of transferring it all to the wall. Slowly, but surely, it was up and we were in love! Oh my god, so much love!

We also picked out the pendant lights for over the peninsula. They're from Restoration Hardware and are probably overpriced, but I did at least get 20% off with their July 4th sale! Can't wait for them to get here! Also, we're waiting on our stools from World Market. Unfortunately we have to wait until September. Boo. They make the chair in barstool height, but we need counter height. Turns out a lot of people want this- just look at the comments on the site. People want counter height! And they have for years. Good thing the wait is almost over!

The next day, we finished the fence. The fence that we started last June. As in June 2013. Yeah, that's right. Honestly, it still wouldn't be done if our neighbors wouldn't have started building their own fence! They hired someone and he was booking it, so I said "We have to finish ours before they do!" Sure enough, that got us into gear and we got it done. All we need now are some adirondack chairs and some lights strung in the tress and we'll be good to go!

what a weekend!

You know that feeling when you are so glad to be home? Yep, I had that this weekend. I had a great time weekend visiting my dad and then my best friend in Raleigh, but coming home Sunday ended up being such a long day.

An hour into my 6 hour drive home I got a flat tire. This lead to a very creepy old man hitting on me while he changed my tire. AAA should really screen these people. No female, driving alone, wants to feel like she is going to be raped. And then I couldn't drive home on the spare tire (or over 50 mph,) so that lead me to buying a new tire at walmart. Thankfully, this all happened about 30 min from my cousins, so they joined me at walmart and then fed me some good ol' chicken and pastry. Also nice was cooper keeping me occupied with his adorable sleeping positions.

Before Sunday's unforseen adventure, I did have a great weekend in Raleigh with my bestie. Of course the first night we had Cheesecake Factory. It's one of my favorites, solely on the fact that they have free bread. That's pretty much how I rate restaurants. 1. Do they have bread. 2. How good is the bread. And 3. Do you have to pay for the bread. It's safe to say that Cheesecake Factory is at the top of that list. Saturday was jammed packed with shopping, first hitting the sale section at Anthro, where we snagged some good markdowns and volcano candles for each of our birthdays. Then for dinner she took me to this yummy local Italian restaurant, Bella Monica.

Their bread is out of this world. We inhaled it so fast that I didn't get a picture, but trust me on this. It comes cut like a piece of cake, slathered with olive oil and topped with herbs and sauteed onion, and you eat it with a fork. Oh my god. Probably the best bread ever. Then we split their calamari, but it wasn't what you usually get. It had no breading and wasn't fried. It was seared in basil. Sounds kind of odd, but so. good. For my entree, I stuck to what I knew would be perfect, and got a margherita pizza. All in all, Bella Monica was such a win. I'll definitely be begging Mal to go back the next time I visit!

granny love: show it off

This past week I've been busy getting my website all ready for the world to see. Lots of balancing in awkward poses to get the shot, but it was fun seeing all my finished pieces. I realized that I never showed this quilt, all bound and beautiful on the blog, so here it is!

You can read all about my process with this quilt in this post.

wonky log cabin quilt

I'm so excited to finally share this beauty! It's one of my favorite pieces, but also was one of the hardest. I had in my head what I wanted it to look like. Effortless and easy. I describe it like when you try to style your hair so that it looks like you didn't, like you just woke up like that. I wanted this quilt to look like I just threw it together and it worked. Turns out it takes a lot of effort to make it look effortless! I won't say that it turned out exactly like I planned, but that's ok. I love it.

I did set some rules for myself in terms of color. I wanted to stick to turquoises and golds, with some soft creams. Along the way, some extras snuck in, like the pink and chartreuse. Those turned out to be great additions because they make the others sing.

So here's the wonky log cabin quilt from start to finish!

Also, the website is coming along and I'm hoping to make it live very soon!! This quilt, and others, will be for sale.
